Hungerford Place was organized in 1993 by seven individuals and endorsed at that time by the town’s three churches. It was established to provide food assistance and basic necessities to people in need. The group bestowed an old local name to its organization. The Hungerford family was highly esteemed for generations in Sherman.
Originally Hungerford Place was an actual food pantry where the community donated non-perishables for people in need. After many years, Hungerford has switched to giving our grocery gift cards because there is no longer space to house the food. At Thanksgiving, the Cub Scouts and Hungerford work together to provide a nice Thanksgiving basket for each family and senior in need.
